TTOC workshop to address economic challenges

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (TTOC) vice president Diane Henderson’s intention is that this year’s Advancing Women in Leadership (AWIL) workshop will assist women to cope with the economic and financial challenges presented during a COVID-19 period.

The TTOC-hosted event will come off on October 2 and will be conducted via the digital platform Zoom.

This year’s AWIL, the fifth annual edition of the workshop, is entitled: “Overcoming the Economic Financial Challenges of COVID-19” and will feature Karen Caraballo, chief entrepreneurial development officer, National Entrepreneurship Development Company Limited (NEDCO).

Caraballo is expected to be one of several guest speakers who are likely to be confirmed over the coming days. Nicole Duke-Westfield has also been identified as the moderator of the 5th edition.

“We know of the economic environment we are in right now, that women have been impacted more or equally as much as men. Some of the issues facing women are a little more challenging,” said Henderson, “...in light of that, just as in past forums, we hope to be able to inspire women so that they could equip themselves to rise above whatever challenges they face. Hopefully, we can demonstrate how to become a COVID-19 entrepreneur, with the provision of information to address their current circumstances.”
Henderson said the workshop will address and sensitise participants to strategies to assist in mitigating some of the challenges that women are experiencing.

The workshop will also treat with highlighting coping mechanisms to deal with mental health. “We hope to have at least one or two persons who have had to pivot in order to deal with this and to ensure security for their families and their children,” said Henderson, the chairperson of the TTOC Women in Sport Commission and the chef de mission for Team TTO at the 2019 Pan American Games.
